Quality meat products start with quality cattle. Gwinner’s commitment to provide fine products begins with raising their own pasture raised Longhorn crossed cattle without the use of added growth hormones and unnecessary antibiotics. Crossbreeding Longhorn cows to selective French heritage bulls; Aubrac & Tarantese, results in healthy vigorous calves well adapted to East Kootenay, year-round pastures. Yes, it does takes longer for pasture raised cattle to mature than cattle raised in modern feedlots, but the flavour is really worth it!
The Longhorn breed was introduced to North America by the Spaniards in the late 1400s. The feral Longhorn spread throughout Southern US; California, New Mexico, Arizona with estimates exceeding 4 million in Texas alone in the late 1800s. But in the early 1900s, the colonization of Texas almost brought the Longhorn to extinction. Fortunately, this breed was saved by a few insightful breeders.
Known as a very hardy, adaptable breed, the Longhorn developed resistance to diseases and pests that can plague other breeds. An exceptionally easy calving breed and strong maternal instincts, calving requires little to no human intervention. Their exceptional horn development is a natural deterrent to predators and may be a contributing factor to their success living in the wild. We have Longhorn skulls available for purchase.
